Window Replacement in Columbia, SC

Vinyl Windows in Columbia

Columbia Window Co. finds you an installer for vinyl replacement windows, the lowest-priced frame on the market and the one most window quotes start with. A vinyl window is made of extruded PVC lineals with UV stabilizers, cut and fused at the corners, with hollow chambers inside that can be left empty, reinforced with metal or filled with foam. The outside can be plain white or tan, laminated with a woodgrain or dark film, or co-extruded with a tougher colored capstock. Every unit should carry two labels: the NFRC energy label, and a performance grade under the North American Fenestration Standard, AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440.

Fusion-Welded Frames and Hollow Chambers

Look at the corner of a vinyl window. On many units the frame and sash corners are heat-welded: the ends of the lineals are melted and pressed together into one piece, and the seam is cleaned off. A mechanically fastened corner, joined with screws and sealant, is another way to build it. Inside the profile, walls divide the extrusion into chambers. HomeGuide notes that more chambers insulate better but cost more to make. Chamber count isn't on the energy label, though; the frame's effect shows up in the whole-window U-factor, so compare that number rather than a brochure cross-section.

Metal-Reinforced and Foam-Filled Frames

Vinyl isn't stiff on its own, so tall sashes, wide sliders and meeting rails often get a steel or aluminum stiffener slid into a chamber. Ask where a series uses reinforcement, especially on the meeting rail of a large double-hung. The Department of Energy points out that vinyl's hollow cavities can also be filled with insulation, which makes the frame perform better than standard vinyl or wood. Ask whether foam fill is standard in the series or an upgrade with its own price.

Painted, Laminated and Co-Extruded Colors

White and tan vinyl are the same color all the way through. Darker exteriors are made three ways. A laminate is a film, often woodgrain or a solid dark color, bonded to the outside face. Co-extruded capstock is a weather-resistant colored layer formed onto the profile as it's made. Paint is sprayed on after manufacture. A dark frame gets hotter in the sun than a white one, so ask whether the maker rates the series for the color you want, and what its published finish warranty says about fading and peeling.

Vinyl Window Series, Entry to Top Tier

Vinyl lines are usually sold in tiers. The entry series uses thinner walls, fewer chambers and a basic glass package. Upper series add reinforcement, foam, better weatherstripping, heavier hardware and a wider choice of glass and colors. The same opening can be priced very differently depending on which tier the quote uses, so make sure two quotes name a series, not just "vinyl double-hung."

Performance Grade (PG) Labels

The 2021 residential code that South Carolina uses requires exterior windows to be tested by an independent lab and labeled for compliance with AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440, the North American Fenestration Standard. The label carries a performance class and a grade in pounds per square foot, written along the lines of "R-PG35." A PG rating means the window passed the full set of tests: structural load (ASTM E330), air leakage (ASTM E283, with 0.3 cfm per square foot allowed for the R, LC and CW classes), water penetration (ASTM E547), operating force, and forced entry (ASTM F588). A DP (design pressure) rating covers structural load only. Homes normally use the R class; the heavier classes are covered on the commercial window replacement page. The standard has been revised several times; the 2022 edition was the fourth, and a 2026 edition has been published.

Vinyl Window Prices

HomeGuide puts vinyl windows at $350 to $1,500 per window installed, nationally, with labor alone at $100 to $500 of that. Size, style and series set where a quote lands in that range. A small single-hung in a builder line sits at the bottom; a large double-hung in a top series with a dark laminate sits near the top. For the regional resale figures and whole-house numbers, see retrofit window replacement.

Vinyl Windows in Columbia Heat

PVC moves with temperature. Engineering ToolBox lists its linear expansion at 54 to 110 millionths per degree Celsius, against 9.0 for plate glass, so a vinyl frame grows and shrinks six to twelve times as much as the glass it holds. The glazing bead and the seal between frame and glass are designed to take up that movement. In practice:

  • Color

A dark exterior heats up more on a south or west wall in a Columbia July. Ask about it before you choose black.
  • UV

The Department of Energy notes vinyl is made with UV stabilizers so sunlight doesn't break it down; ask what the maker's finish warranty says about chalking or fading.
  • Glass first

The Department of Energy rates the glazing as the biggest energy choice in most windows, and in this climate that means solar heat gain. Our energy-efficient windows page covers the numbers.
  • Lifespan

The home inspectors' association InterNACHI estimates 20 to 40 years for vinyl and fiberglass windows, while warning that its chart is only a rough guide. ENERGY STAR describes vinyl as low maintenance with good thermal insulation.

Vinyl Window Limits Worth Knowing

Vinyl is the sensible default for most Columbia replacement jobs, but not every one. Three cases where it pays to price something else:

  1. STEP01

    A historic street front

ENERGY STAR notes that wood frames are generally favored in historical neighborhoods, and in Columbia's historic districts, new windows go through a review first. See wood windows before choosing vinyl for the front of an older house.
  2. STEP02

Very large or very dark units

A big picture window or a black exterior puts the most strain on a material that moves with heat. Fiberglass expands far less.
  3. STEP03

    Narrow sightlines

HomeGuide credits fiberglass with narrower frames and a wider view. If the glass-to-frame ratio matters on a small window, compare the profiles side by side.
